P4 chipset market shaken up again with Intel’s DDR-based 845 B0

Digitimes.com reports that the Pentium 4-based chipset market is expected to experience some shake-ups with volume deliveries of Intel’s DDR266-supporting 845B0 (845B-step/845D), starting this week.
Motherboard makers have already begun related production and built up basic inventories, but they are required by Intel not to promote the 845B0 boards until December 16.
Given that the SDRAM-based 845 A3 and DDR-compliant 845 B0 chipsets share the identical core fabrication process, Intel has quoted the two lines at the same price of US$40.

The pricing policy is rather favorable to motherboard makers in the preliminary stages, since the prices of 845 B0 boards will be approximately 10-20% higher than those of the 845A3 products. Although the two chipsets share almost the same designs, their supporting motherboards differ slightly in layouts and memory slots, thus making the production cost for a 845 B0 board more expensive than its SDRAM counterpart by US$1-2.
The new 845 B0 motherboards are expected to take market share from products based on other DDR-supporting chipsets such as the SiS645 of Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS), P4X266A of VIA Technologies and Aladdin-P4 of Acer Laboratories (ALi), said board companies. However, they predict the effect should be limited, as products based on Taiwanese designers’ chipsets focus mainly on medium and low-end markets.
The latest chipsets will take a portion of the 845 A3 market as well. Motherboard makers are said to have shifted their orders from the 845 A3 to the 845 B0 lately. Although the new chip is overbooked, board makers said that they have not experienced any shortage problems this week as they did while waiting for deliveries of the 845 A3.
Despite high expectations for the new chipsets, board makers also said that 845 B0 products will not contribute much to their revenues this year, since related motherboards will not hit the market until after mid-December. By that time, the market demand has usually turned weak, but the new line is expected to raise companies’ overall ASPs (average selling prices).
