전까지 섣불리 AVIVO에 대한 평가를 내릴 수는 없다. ATI가 꺼내놓은 프레스 릴리즈에는 어느 정도
과장이 있을 수도 있고, 앞서 소개한 프로세싱 과정 중 일부는 이미 구현되어 있던 기능이기도 하다.
AVIVO에서 지원하게 될 것으로 기대되는 몇 가지 중요한 핵심 포인트는 (실제로 구현 가능하다는 전제
하에) 첫째로 H.264 영상 인코딩에서의 하드웨어 가속이다. 현재 H.264 영상의 인코딩에는 듀얼코어
프로세서가 풀가동 되더라도 상당한 시간이 걸리는데 이를 VPU가 분담해서 도와준다면, 단축되는 시간이
적더라도 분명한 메리트가 될 수 있을 것이다. 다만, 이 기술이 범용 인코딩 프로그램에서 지원할 수 있을지,
아니면 ATI에서 제공하는 특정 소프트웨어에서만 적용될지 여부에 활용 가치가 달라질 것이다.
둘째로, H.264를 포함한 각종 코덱들을 재생할 때 하드웨어 가속이 이루어진다는 것인데, 이 것은
카탈리스트 최신 드라이버에서 지원될 것이라고 이미 해외 뉴스에서 알려졌던 부분이고, 차세대 R5xx 계열부터

products?
A. PC products that contain Theater™ 550 Pro or ATI’s
Digital TV demodulators are considered Avivo enabled,
however only future ATI products will be considered for the
Avivo label.

A. No, there is not a new Avivo version of these products.
Previously purchased TV Wonder Elite and HDTV Wonder will
support Avivo out of the box with no firmware or software
update required. ATI includes these as part of the Avivo
lineup as they are the best of breed tuner products
currently available in the market today.
Q. Will Avivo enabled ATI products cost more?
A. Avivo is a benefit to all of ATI's future based products.
While prices for future products can’t be specified, you can
be assured that Avivo will raise the performance value of
ATI's PC based products not the price.
Q. What is the key application to demonstrate Avivo’s
capabilities?
A. Avivo provides benefits to any PC application thanks to
the advanced image quality the technology offers. One
application that is well suited at showing off Avivo is
advanced video playback with an H.264 player. Only products
with Avivo will be able to playback high definition, high
bitrate H.264 video, such as the type found in Blu-ray and
HD-DVD, without frame drops.
Q. Avivo improves video quality, how about game image
quality?
A. Avivo improves the image quality of anything you do on
the PC, including playing games. With a robust display
focused feature set, Avivo is able to render games more
accurately, play games at higher resolutions and connect to
new displays. Look for more information on Avivo’s role in
gaming in the coming weeks.
Q. Will Avivo impact the CPU or need more memory bandwidth?
A. One of the key benefits of Avivo is that the technology
allows for work to be offloaded from the CPU plus system
memory bus, and onto the ATI graphics processor unit (GPU).
This means that products with Avivo actually lower your CPU
requirements, allowing for video and photo related tasks,
such as playing back Blu-ray H.264 video.
Q. Is Avivo just a driver
update (software)?
A. Avivo is not a driver update. Avivo leverages new
hardware features found in our Theater 550 Pro chip and next
generation Radeon® products. These hardware features include
the dual 10-bit Avivo display engine, hardware color
correction engine, hardware video acceleration engine and
advanced scaling processor. Thus, a driver update will not
bring Avivo’s features to previous generation products. The
exception to this is the TV Wonder Elite and HDTV Wonder
products which already have Avivo technology integrated.
Q. Will we see competitive solutions offer Avivo
functionality?
A. Avivo and its features are unique to ATI's graphics chips
and only ATI has the unique capability of delivering a
complete end-to-end solution to enhance video and display.
Q. How does Avivo compare with
the competition? What is different in hardware, only 10-bit
or others?
A. Avivo is about focusing on the entire video and display
pipeline, not just a portion of it like some competing
